Mission Statement

To inspire and safely educate young people, through 4-H, to forge positive attributes and foster a lifelong fellowship with horses.

About

The Mackinac Island 4-H Horse club was originally formed in 1997 by the youth of the Mackinac Island school system. Led by coach, Leanne Brodeur, the Mackinac Island 4-H Horse club is centered on equine education and horsemanship. The club meets year-round with specialized sessions in the winter and summer.

During the summer season, the Mackinac 4-H Horse Club meets weekly at the Mackinac Community Equestrian Center. Horses of the equestrian center are utilized for 4-H lessons and horsemanship demonstrations. Students also participate in educational sessions where they learn about parts of the horse, breeds, disciplines, and other particular fields of expertise. The summer session ends with a 4-H awards banquet and steak fry held for the community at the facility.

The winter session is predominately classroom focused. The 4-H students spend this session role-playing different exercises, utilizing props for obstacles, and practicing techniques they have learned. Topics that are covered during this session include: measuring, timing, patterns, teamwork, balance, self-confidence, and trust. The winter session is setup to prepare 4-H students for the summer where they will spend a majority of their time in 4-H interacting and communicating with horses.

Mackinac 4-H Horse Club encourages all 4-H youth to participate in any of our programs and events riders and non-riders alike.
